What Does "Next To" Mean in Logic Grid Puzzles?
Does "next to" mean left or right? Neither — and that is exactly the point.
What it means
"A is next to B" is an adjacency clue: A and B occupy neighbouring slots in the row, with nobody between them. In a four-person lineup, next to means exactly one slot apart — positions 1 and 2, 2 and 3, or 3 and 4.
The crucial property: "next to" is symmetric but side-blind. It tells you the pair forms a block; it does not tell you whether A is on the block's left end or right end. Pinning the sides needs a second clue — a "left of", a "right of", or an edge fact like "A is at position 1". This is why "next to" clues pair so powerfully with edge clues.
Example on the board
Highlighted: Mia and Leo on slots 1–2. The clue is satisfied because they are adjacent with nobody between. But the clue alone also allows Leo–Mia in slots 1–2, or the pair on slots 2–3 or 3–4 — four legal arrangements in total.
Correct read: {Mia, Leo} form a movable block. Wrong read: "Mia is next to Leo, so Mia is on the left" — the side comes from a different clue, never from "next to" itself.
Quick check: rebuild the row
The example above shows one solved arrangement. The tiles below are shuffled — tap them in the order that satisfies the clue.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a fixed side The most common wrong deduction is locking A to the left of B the moment you read "next to". Keep the block double-sided until another clue pins it — count both arrangements when checking whether a slot fits.
- Using "next to" across gaps One empty-feeling slot in between still breaks adjacency. If a clue wants “somewhere nearby but not necessarily beside”, the game words it differently — "next to" always means immediately beside.
- Missing the edge bonus A next-to pair at the very edge (slots 1–2 or 3–4) has fewer arrangements than one in the middle. If other clues force one member of the pair to an edge, the whole block snaps into place.
Frequently asked questions
Does "next to" mean left or right?
Neither, on purpose. "Next to" only asserts adjacency — the pair occupies two touching slots. Which member is on the left must come from another clue, such as "Mia is left of Leo" or "Mia is at position 1".
Does "next to" count diagonal neighbours?
No. In this game the lineup is a single horizontal row, so only the immediate left or right neighbour counts. There is no second row to be diagonal to.
What is the difference between "next to" and "adjacent"?
Nothing — they are synonyms. Some boards word the same constraint as "directly beside" or "immediately next to". All of them mean: touching slots, nobody in between.
Where does the "next to" clue appear in Profile Perfect?
This wording shows up from the early levels onward. The Practice section at the bottom of this page lists the specific levels that use "next to" — open one to see it in a real walkthrough.
How is the "next to" clue different from its lookalike clues?
Check the lookalike comparison on this page: it spells out the difference from the nearest neighbor clue and what mis-taps usually follow from mixing them up.
Put it into practice
The fastest way to make a clue stick is to use it on a real case. Work through a full board with layered hints — the method, not just the answer.
