What Does "Left Of" Mean in Logic Grid Puzzles?

A direction clue that fixes order — but not distance. "Somewhere to the left" is not "immediately to the left".

Position & adjacency “left of”

What it means

"A is left of B" is a direction clue: A's slot number is smaller than B's. By default it is non-adjacent — A could be one slot left of B, or three. Any arrangement with A somewhere on B's left satisfies it.

When the game wants adjacency plus direction, it says so: "A is immediately to the left of B" means A is directly beside B on B's left — that single clue fixes both the order and the gap. Learning to spot the word "immediately" (or "directly") is the whole game with direction clues.

Example on the board

Clue: "Ava is left of Mia." Row of 4, read left to right

Highlighted: Ava on slot 1 and Mia on slot 3. Ava's slot number is smaller, so the clue holds — even though Sam stands between them. The pair is NOT adjacent here, and the clue never required it.

Correct read: Ava ∈ slot 1, Mia ∈ slot 3 satisfies "left of". Wrong read: assuming Sam cannot be between them — plain "left of" allows any gap; only "immediately left of" forbids it.

Quick check: rebuild the row

The example above shows one solved arrangement. The tiles below are shuffled — tap them in the order that satisfies the clue.

Common mistakes

  • Reading "left of" as "immediately left of" Without the word "immediately" (or "directly"), any distance is allowed. Treating every "left of" as adjacent silently deletes legal arrangements and can make a solvable board look impossible.
  • Forgetting direction is one-way "A is left of B" does not put B anywhere specific — B is simply right of A. Chains work best when you write them as A < B (A left of B) and merge them like number lines.

Frequently asked questions

Does "left of" mean immediately next to?

Not by default. Plain "left of" allows any gap. Only "immediately left of" / "directly left of" forces adjacency — watch for those words.

Left from whose perspective?

The player's. Left is the left edge of the row as you see it on screen, and slot 1 is the leftmost position. You never need to mirror or rotate the board.

How do "left of" and "next to" work together?

"Next to" builds a two-person block; "left of" aims it. Mia next to Leo plus Mia left of Leo gives you a welded pair in exact order — one of the strongest combinations on a board.

Where does the "left of" clue appear in Profile Perfect?

Put it into practice

The fastest way to make a clue stick is to use it on a real case. Work through a full board with layered hints — the method, not just the answer.
