What Does "Before" Mean in Logic Grid Puzzles?

Sequence, not position — unless the board draws the sequence as a row.

Sequence & order “before”

What it means

"A comes before B" is a sequence clue: A holds an earlier place in an ordered set — performances in a show, dishes in a course, days in a week. A's index is smaller; that is the entire content of the clue.

The subtlety: on many boards the sequence is drawn left to right, so "before" ends up looking exactly like "left of". When that happens they are the same axis and you can merge the clues freely. But when the sequence lives in its own column (say, order numbers 1–4), "before" says nothing about standing positions. Always ask: which row does this sequence live in?

Example on the board

Clue: "Mia performs before Ava." Row of 4, read left to right

Highlighted: Mia on slot 1 and Ava on slot 4 of the performance order. Mia's act number is smaller, so the clue holds. Sam and Leo take acts 2–3 in some order — the clue doesn't care which.

Correct read: Mia ∈ earlier act than Ava. Wrong read: "Mia performs immediately before Ava" — plain "before" allows acts in between; only the word "immediately" closes the gap.

Quick check: rebuild the row

The example above shows one solved arrangement. The tiles below are shuffled — tap them in the order that satisfies the clue.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the sequence is the lineup If the board has both a standing row and an order column, "before" belongs to the order column unless a clue explicitly links them. Wiring "before" into the wrong row is the classic dead end.
  • Treating "before" as "immediately before" Without "immediately" (or "right before"), any number of items may sit in between. Keep the gap open until another clue closes it.

Frequently asked questions

Is "before" the same as "left of"?

Only when the sequence is drawn as a left-to-right row — then the two clues share one axis and can be merged. If the sequence has its own column (order numbers, days), "before" says nothing about standing positions.

Can items stand between "A before B"?

Yes, any number of them. "Before" only compares indices. The adjacent version is always worded "immediately before" or "right before".

How do I chain "before" clues?

Exactly like "left of": write A < B, merge shared names, and read off the total order. Three chained clues on four items leave only one unknown gap.

Where does the "before" clue appear in Profile Perfect?

This wording shows up from the early levels onward. The Practice section at the bottom of this page lists the specific levels that use "before" — open one to see it in a real walkthrough.

How is the "before" clue different from its lookalike clues?

Check the lookalike comparison on this page: it spells out the difference from the nearest neighbor clue and what mis-taps usually follow from mixing them up.

Put it into practice

The fastest way to make a clue stick is to use it on a real case. Work through a full board with layered hints — the method, not just the answer.
