Players often take '2 columns away' to mean 'right next door' and look for Basketball on the wrong trophy. The clue means there is exactly one trophy between the Globe and Baseball trophies, so B (Globe) is the Basketball trophy, and C stays for Badminton.
Skipping the same-material clue
After B's shape and sport are set, some players guess B's material instead of using the clue 'Rugby and Basketball trophies are made out of the same material.' Since A is Gold and B is Basketball, B must also be Gold; then C and D are forced to be Jade and Crystal.
