What Does "Younger Than" Mean in Logic Grid Puzzles?

The mirror of "older than" — same chain, opposite direction.

Age & comparison “younger than”

What it means

"A is younger than B" means A's age is a smaller number than B's. It is the exact mirror of the "older than" clue — every single "younger" statement can be rewritten as an "older" statement with the two names swapped, and many solvers do exactly that the moment they read the clue.

The reason flipping helps: your age chain should grow in one direction only. If some clues add to the top of the chain and others to the bottom, it is easy to paste a new fact into the wrong end. One direction, one chain, fewer mistakes.

Example on the board

Clue: "Leo is younger than Mia." Row of 4, read left to right

Highlighted: Leo and Mia. Leo's age must be the smaller number — so in the age chain, Mia sits above Leo. Sam and Ava will slot somewhere between them once more comparisons arrive, but the clue alone doesn't say where.

Correct read: age chain so far is Mia > Leo. Same fact, flipped: "Mia is older than Leo." Wrong read: Leo stands to the left of Mia — position was never part of the clue.

Quick check: rebuild the row

The example above shows one solved arrangement. The tiles below are shuffled — tap them in the order that satisfies the clue.

Common mistakes

  • Flipping the names but not the relation "Leo is younger than Mia" becomes "Mia is older than Leo" — not "Mia is younger than Leo". Say the flipped sentence out loud once before writing it into your chain; it is the single most common slip on age boards.
  • Treating younger as earlier in the lineup Younger does not mean standing closer to the left. Any link between the age column and the standing order must come from an explicit clue.

Frequently asked questions

Is "younger than" just "older than" reversed?

Yes, exactly. "A is younger than B" ≡ "B is older than A". Both clues build the same age chain; pick one direction and convert everything into it.

How do I combine several age clues?

Build a chain. Start with any comparison, then attach each new clue where its two names already appear. If a clue names two people who are both strangers to your chain, park it and come back after the next clue connects them.

Does "younger than" tell me anything about "before/after" clues?

Only if a separate clue ties ages to the sequence. On its own, "younger than" belongs to the age category; "before/after" belongs to the sequence category. They are different axes.
